Dear friend,

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officer's Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

In honor of National Police Week, I would like to thank the women and men of the Fairfax County Police Department and all public safety professionals who serve our community.

Most importantly, we also remember all of the first responders who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Our police department is a model for departments across the county. I look forward to continuing to work with our law enforcement professionals and the community to ensure our neighborhoods provide a safe environment for all our residents.

Also, VDOT is hosting an in-person public information meeting on Monday at John R. Lewis High School about the I-495 Southside Express Lanes study and to seek public input. The local public in-person meeting is Monday, May 23, at John R. Lewis High School, 6540 Franconia Road, Springfield, VA, and begins at 6:30 PM.

The in-person meeting will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. (presentation at 7 p.m.)

On Wednesday, I stopped by Mr. Zywiol's AP Government class at Hayfield High School, and later met with the John Lewis High School Student Governmental Association to discuss my role as Lee District Supervisor.

Students also asked me about my previous professional experience and how that has led me to where I am today.

Thank you to Principal Smith, Mr. Zywiol, and the students for inviting me and asking insightful questions!

It was my pleasure to attend the unveiling of the newly branded Potomac Banks area, which mainly encompasses South County, on Wednesday. The announcement was fittingly located on the banks of the Potomac River at George Washington's Mount Vernon estate. Moreover, this effort aims to bring tourism to museums, historical sites, wineries and local business altogether.

Community Post: Spring Shoe Fundraiser

Please join Deputy Fire Cheif Willie Bailey, Firefighter & Freinds to the Rescue, and the Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department as they raise funds for their Spring Shoe Fundraiser. Donations will provide brand new, athletic-style shoes to local children in need this spring.

When you donate to provide a brand-new pair of shoes, it gives children the confidence to socialize, succeed, and hope for a brighter future. During the Winter, Operation Warm also provides over 4000 new coats every year to deserving families. They take care of the kids from head to toe.

Over the past 23 years, Operation Warm has served over 4.5 million children across North America. In our communities, nearly one in five children live in need. For their families, paying for food, housing, heat, and healthcare takes priority, meaning many children have to go without proper clothing items needed to stay healthy and active.

Operation Warm is a nonprofit, GuideStar Platinum-rated 501(c)(3). Over 95¢ of every $1 goes directly to their programs.
